| Education: B.S. degrees in mathematics and geophysics from New Mexico Institute of Technology in 1978. PhD in geophysics (seismology) from the California Institute of Technology in 1983. Career History: Professor of Geosciences at the University of Arizona where he has been a faculty member since 1983. Seismological research speciality is verification seismology. Other research interests include real-time seismology, mechanics of deep earthquakes and the evolution of the Andes Mountains. Professional Accomplishments: Awarded the James Macelwane Medal from the American Geophysical Union (AGU) in recognition of research accomplishments by a young scientist in 1992. Has served in various elected offices of professional geophysical societies and organizations, including chairman of IRIS (Incorporated Research Institutions in Seismology) 1994-1996 and President of SSA (Seismological Society of America) 1999-2001. Has served on more than a dozen government committees reviewing various aspects of seismological monitoring. Chairman of the AGU committee that produced a position paper on the verifiability of a CTBT (released in October 1999). Publications: Co-author of the most widely used text books in seismology, Modern Global Seismology, and has written more than 100 peer reviewed research papers. Has written more than 30 papers on various topics related to the testing of nuclear weapons underground. |
